About Me

I was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, in a bilingual environment that fostered my passion for languages. My parents, both English and Spanish teachers, were meticulous about language, instilling in me a deep respect for clear and accurate communication. My father, a U.S. citizen who moved to Mexico after World War Two, was frequently sought after for his translation skills by local lawyers and doctors. Discussions around our dinner table often revolved around topics like astronomy, physics, and philosophy, reflecting the intellectual environment I grew up in.

My mother was the daughter of Dr. Fernando Banda, a renowned surgeon and the founder of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara School of Medicine. After finishing high school, I had the opportunity to study in Santa Monica, California, where my English skills flourished. I earned an AA Degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology in 1969, which marked the beginning of my professional journey.

 

In 1997, I started doing freelance pro bono translations for a non-profit organization, both orally and in writing. By 2004, I was hired by the same organization and soon became the Spanish Department Manager, responsible for translating English publications and providing simultaneous oral translations into Spanish. I also trained several younger translators and interpreters, passing on the knowledge and expertise I had gained over the years.

Throughout my career, I have traveled extensively across Latin America and the Caribbean, covering about 500,000 air miles. My work has included over 2,000 hours of live interpretation at international conferences, translating and proofreading numerous books, booklets, and international news magazines. I am passionate about being a bridge for clear communication, helping people understand each other.
